The Federal War Against Wildlife: Your Tax Dollars At Work

02 May

83,242 coyotes were killed by Wildlife Services in 2011

After almost a century of waging a stealth war on predators and other wildlife across the country light is finally being shed on an organization that is deceptively named “Wildlife Services.” Wildlife Services is an arm of the United States Department of Agriculture and are essentially used as assassins to kill wildlife who are targeted often just for existing. This is the agency that is responsible for killing 3,752,362 animals in 2011 on your tax dime. Out of this number huge numbers of pets and “non-targeted” animals have also been killed by this secretive agency. To carry out their wildlife assassinations Wildlife Services uses methods ranging from all types of traps, aerial killing from planes and helicopters, and amazingly through booby traps filled with lethal poisons like cyanide.

After many years of stealth activity and their refusal to provide information about their activities, investigative reporter Todd Knudson, of the Sacramento Bee, has published the first two parts of a three part series exposing this nefarious agency. The articles are outstanding and pull no punches exposing what activities this deplorable agency of our government takes part in.

The killing agency: Wildlife Services’ brutal methods leave a trail of animal death

Wildlife Services’ deadly force opens Pandora’s box of environmental problems

Part three will be published this coming weekend. Our tax money is paying for the wholesale slaughter of everything from small birds to bears in an effort to pander to agricultural and hunting entities nationwide. Not only are the hunting and trapping communities engaging in a war on our wildlife, they are now backed up by federal assassins who are now killing wildlife to boost “game” numbers in many states to benefit them.
Please contact your legislators and demand that these wildlife assassins be stopped and that the actions of this agency be further publicized. The veil of secrecy that this agency shrouds their activities in is absolutely unacceptable when they function on our money. This secrecy should be expected from our intelligence agencies and the military, but not from an organization whose main purpose is killing MILLIONS of OUR wildlife for the sake of hunters and ranchers.

Thanks for posting this–it’s great to see the truth about Wildlife Services’ long history of cruelty coming to light. Yesterday we witnessed an example of the kind of “services” the government is doing to wildlife: they trapped, restained and branded an unanesthetized sea lion. You could smell the smoke from her burning flesh as it drifted for 100 yards across the harbor!

I am so tired of this mindset that wildlife is something to be “managed” by humans. Nature did a perfect job long before us and will continue to so so long after us. I really hoped that with the election of a supposedly “liberal” president that many of these activities would have been curtailed, but just the opposite has happened. I am so disgusted that I don’t know if I even want to vote in November because it almost seems like they are one on the same.

And what was the alleged purpose behind that act of cruelty?

They brand them so they can count how many times they see them eating fish (the only thing sea lions have evolved to eat). If they see the same sea lion near the dam 5 times, they kill them…

Right, and I can’t bring myself to vote for someone who makes jokes about eating a dog.
