**UPDATE** This is the full quote from NRB board member William Bruins:
“God created homo-sapiens to be in charge of controlling livestock (misspeaks, corrects) wildlife populations. And if we were to allow the wolf to propagate and go about being the predators that they are, that is not managing the wolf population. So I therefore move to approve the 275 wolf harvest quota and the license issue at 10x the number.”
When it comes to wildlife issues in Wisconsin it is no longer a surprise to anyone that the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Natural Resources Board are in the business of pandering to special interests hellbent on eradicating the gray wolf from out state. As expected today, the Natural Resources Board rubber stamped the sham “Wolf Advisory Committee’s” wolf kill quota of 275 despite massive public outrage in the form of letters and testimony before the board. It all was ignored and explained away in the form of propaganda and even religious justification by one of the board members.
First we will start with the propaganda filled press release from he Wisconsin DNR. This is what Dave MacFarland, DNR carnivore specialist, had to say in the release:
“Wolves and wolf hunting seasons evoke a spectrum of emotions and opinions from people. This quota was set with diverse input to try to balance many of the social interests in wolves with the need, and the department’s responsibility, to manage the state’s wolf population,” said Dave MacFarland, DNR carnivore specialist. “Goals established in our current management plan are lower than our current population. The quota approved today will put downward pressure on the number of wolves in the state in accordance with the approved plan.”
Now Mr. MacFarland from all accounts is a respectable man with vast knowledge about the science behind wolves and other carnivores but in this case he is shamelessly towing the DNR line. “Diverse input?” Where? The DNR’s sham “Wolf Advisory Committee” was stacked with SEVEN anti-wolf groups, ONE allegedly “pro-wolf” group, (Timberwolf Alliance), and a tribal representative from the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission. The rest of the group were employees of the DNR and anti-wolf government agencies like the USDA’s Wildlife Services. The Humane Society of the United States, Sierra Club, and the National Wolfwatcher Coalition were all refused seats on this committee. Of the involved groups and representatives the ONLY one to stand up for wolves and against this reckless quota was the tribal representative.
A reminder of who is on this “diverse” group:
Bill Vander Zouwen, DNR WM Chair
David MacFarland, DNR WM CO
Adrian Wydeven – DNR WM CO
Brad Koele – DNR WM CO
Steve Hoffman – DNR WM NOD
David Halfmann – DNR WM NED
Sara Kehrli – DNR WM SOD
Kris Johansen – DNR WM WCD
Dan Michels – DNR LE
Barry Gilcheck – DNR CSL
Jenny Pelej – DNR CE
Brian Dhuey – DNR SS
Lee Fahrney – Conservation Congress
Eric Koens – Wisconsin Cattlemans Association
Mike Gappa – Wisconsin Bear Hunters Association
Joe Koback – Safari Club International
Randy Jurewicz – Timber Wolf Alliance
Mike Brust – Wisconsin Bowhunters Association
Peter Fasbender – USFWS
Jake Walcisak – Wisconsin County Forest Association
Dan Eklund – USFS
Jason Suckow – USDA WS
Maynard Breunig – Wisconsin Trappers Association
Ralph Fritsch – Wisconsin Wildlife Federation
Peter David – GLIFWC
And don’t forget that one of the Natural Resources Board members, Greg Kazmierski, is the founding member of the “Hunters Rights Coalition,” a lobbying group that pays lobbyist Bob Welch to lobby for their causes. Welch is also the lobbyist for the Wisconsin Bear Hunters Association which is just another arm of the Hunters Rights Coalition. The Wisconsin Bear Hunters Association and Welch WROTE the wolf kill bill and lobbied for elements of it before the very board that Kazmierski sits and votes on. See where I am going with this? The Natural Resources Board is a guaranteed rubber-stamp for any and all anti-wolf/wildlife proposals that come before them.
But enough about that. Back to the NRB meeting today. During the “public” testimony portion anti-wolf groups like the dubiously named hunting group, the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation whined that this years slaughter was not enough and that the quota should be even higher. From this article:
In verbal testimony Wednesday, Ralph Fritsch of the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation said he supported the agency’s efforts to lower wolf numbers in the state but thought the quota should be higher.
Look at the “Wolf Advisory Committee” list above. Anything seem familiar? Fritsch is not only a mouthpiece for this extremist hunting group, he is also a Conservation Congress Delegate, and a member of the ‘Wolf Advisory Committee.” See the pattern here? All of these anti-wolf/wildlife people and groups are interconnected thus they have absolute power. This is a microcosm of what is occurring all over the state. Special interests having their tentacles into law/rule making bodies, writing laws, and ramming them through the legislative process process. ALEC, the bear hounders, the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation; they are the same monsters just in different clothing. The voice of the citizen no longer matters, and half of us are too oblivious to see it in this state.
And speaking of oblivious this quote came from NRB board member William Bruins during today’s hearing. Now may be a good time to take a seat.
“God created homo sapiens to manage wolves.”
Yup, he really said that during the hearing. This is what we are up against fellow living wildlife advocates. We are up against special interest groups that own the DNR, Legislature, Conservation Congress, and NRB. We are up against religious zealots that use their beliefs to justify the mass slaughter of wolves and other wildlife. And worst of all these are the people that are tasked with making the decisions that mean life or death for our cherished wildlife. Is this how your deity thinks wolves should be managed:
Does your deity find this acceptable?
Wisconsin Wildlife Ethic and other state living wildlife groups are working on developing plans of actions to combat these unethical and corrupt institutions, but we need your help. I anyone has suggestions about LEGAL ways to accomplish these goals we need to hear from you. You can use the “Contact Us” tab at the top of the page, or you can leave your comments here. It is obvious that the traditional methods for fighting this kind of corruption and abuse no longer work under the regime in charge of Wisconsin and nationwide under our supposedly “progressive” president. We need to think outside of the box as what we are currently doing is not successful. Please brainstorm and share any ideas that you can come up with. We look forward to reading them.
