What a Coincidence!

The same day that our esteemed governor signed the wolf kill bill look what news came out of wolf country:

CWD found in deer in northwest Wisconsin

In the real world, I try not to believe in conspiracy theories. However Scott Walker’s Wisconsin is about as far from reality as you can get. A very observant commenter on the Wisconsin State Journal’s website pointed out that the DNR knew about this since early March and received a second confirmation last Friday. However, it was not announced until AFTER Walker signed the wolf kill bill today. If history is any indication the DNR will institute a full scale deer slaughter in this area just as they did in southern Wisconsin.

What is astounding is that wolves help to keep the deer population in check, thus helping to prevent the spread of CWD. Do you think that maybe Walker could have held off on signing this bill with this recent round of news? Of course not. He wouldn’t want to disappoint George Meyer, the Wisconsin Bear Hunters Association, and the lawmakers that are in their pocket. I mean the wolves have have been off the endangered species for a whole two months, the killing must commence.

I am sure that others share my sentiments when I ask, what the hell is wrong with this state?

Hunters Worried About Image After Deer Thrill Killing in Wisconsin

Photo by ForestWander via Wikimedia Commons

This report just surfaced about four people in Wisconsin who poached at least 100 deer in Richland County last December in what is called a “contest.” They also apparently left the killed deer to rot.

Wisconsin man suspected of slaughtering 100 deer in ‘thrill kill’

Of course there is outrage from the hunting community, but not in the manner you would expect. According to the article:

“The suspected illegal slaughtering of deer by Blaha violated all the rules of hunting, authorities said, and has since outraged many hunters and conservation groups who claim Blaha may have depleted the herd and brought unfair notoriety to the sport.”

Yup, they are outraged because it tarnishes their image and takes away deer that they could be killing. I guess that they can’t blame the wolves for this “depletion” of the deer herd.

Note: I normally do not like using Fox News as a reference, but I could not find other sources.

“We Kill Them So They Don’t Die”

Photo from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

I normally try to not shed light on misinformed or misleading letters to the editor of local newspapers. That being said I recently came across a letter to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel where the writer argued that Wisconsin’s upcoming wolf slaughter is “humane” and that they must be killed so that they do not die from disease. What? That argument makes me think of this clip from South Park:

This is not the first time that I have heard this argument. Deer hunters have been arguing for years that hunters are needed because deer are overpopulated and would starve to death if they were not killed. Then out of the other side of their mouth they say that the wolves are killing all of the deer, so now wolves need to be killed. Which is it? Wolves are the best defense against chronic wasting disease and other ailments that affect the deer herds. They should be embraced by the hunting community for keeping the deer herds healthy. But just the opposite is happening. It is no secret that many hunters want to eliminate anything that may get in the way of them getting that “big buck.”

Deer herds nationwide have been kept artificially high to provide for more “hunter opportunity.” According the the Wisconsin Department of Transportation there were 16,947 car crashes just in Wisconsin involving deer in 2010. Out of those crashes there were 14 fatalities and 389 injuries. Do the drivers involved in these crashes get reimbursed by the state of Wisconsin who is responsible for keeping deer numbers artificially high? No, but bear hounders get reimbursed when a wolf kills one of their dogs while terrorizing wildlife. Is that right? Wisconsin has over 1.14 million deer statewide AFTER all of the recent deer hunting seasons, yet the “authors” of the wolf kill bill, SB 411, used the “decimation” of the deer herd in Wisconsin as one of their justifications for this bill.
